Black Knights and DDS were the big winners on Sunday winning the men’s and women’s titles of the PFC Cup Winners Cup Futsal-Davao at the NCCC Mall Activity Area.

As big winners, their title conquests too were big stories.

The Black Knights went through a harrowing battle with top favourite Metro TMS in the men’s semifinals before scoring a giant-sized upset via penalty shootout. Playing with only three men left after most of its stalwarts were thrown the red card in the highly-physical match-up, Metro TMS hang tough to the end for a 2-all standoff only to bow out after goalkeeper Sandro Balderas missed his attempt in the shootout.

The big win set the Black Knights up to go for it all in the finals against another surprise finalist Alia Orange FC. Eventual MVP Francis Abrasaldo found the back of the net five times to lead the Knights to a masterful 7-4 win and the right to play in the National Finals on November 26 in Manila.

The women’s side was a story of experience prevailing over youth. DDS, recent winners of the 2011 Kicksand Beach Football, added the futsal title to its trophy case with a 3-1 conquest over a youth-laden Solido FC Team B. Best striker awardee Merlo Albano scored twice and Kakay Solcruz headed home one to sandwich a lone goal by Solido FC Team B’s Nina Arrieta.

DDS thus also earned the ticket to the National Finals of this tournament organized by the Philippine Futsal Clubs in cooperation with Bravetower Promotions, City Government of Davao, Phoenix Petroleum, Sun Cellular, NCCC Mall and Futsal de Davao.

Philippine Rabbies beat Metro TMS in the battle for third in the men’s side while Solido FC Team A also copped third beating Black Knights in the women’s division.

Abrasaldo and diminutive Annalou Ingles of DDS bagged MVP honors sppnsored by Phoenix while Ronoel Garfin and Reynalyn Ravanes were named Sun Cellular best goalkeepers and won a phone kit each. Ferdinand Balaga of Black Knights and Solcruz won Frenzy best defender awards. The winners of the Alaxan aray ko galing ko awards were Arman Valencia (Black Knights), Mark Dayanay (Phl Rabbies), Kid (Alia Orange FC), Eric Sedeighpour (Metro TMS), Josef Monalan (Alia Orange FC), Kyra Dimaandal (Solido B), Merlo Albano (DDS), Janna Barcemo (Solido B), Gabby Del Fierro (Solido B), and Annalou Ingles (DDS).

Phoenix Petroleum corporate affairs officer Ben Sur and PFC media affairs officer Joy Joseph Dimacali personally handed the trophies to the winners with NCCC Mall’s James Galvez, DFA’s Henry Sabate, Leo Aquino of Unilab, Rolly Quillo of Frenzy, Stef Perez of Cherifer, Mae Aguirre of Green Windows and Rameses Cabanilla of FTC Tower.
